Livelihood and Food Security

Poverty constitutes a denial of human rights and dignity among the children, youth and women in Malawi.  Most youth lack skills to deal with poverty because of limited access to post basic education and vocational training and they find themselves unemployed.  They also lack entrepreneurship skills and seed capital making it difficult to become self-employed.  The result of this is increased street children, juveniles and prostitution.  A large number of rural households who are chronically poor do not manage to produce enough food to meet their subsistence requirements such as low productivity smallholder farmers and the working poor. Young people are affected with this because customary and traditionally, they do not own land and cannot easily access land and farm inputs including the loans. YODEP provide livelihood and Food security interventions with an aim of improving the food self-sufficiency and income levels among poor level in families affected and infected by HIV/AIDS, youth and women headed families

In response to the disasters that hits Malawi, YODEP always operationalize its emergency committees to ably respond to the disaster in order to ensure that children, youth and communities affected by natural disasters are timely assisted and that the poorest of our societies are removed from circumstances of hopelessness.  We provide temporary shelters to the affected families, beddings, food items, livelihood and WASH facilities to the affected families.  Those families living in the evacuation centres are relocated to the upper lands and offered temporary shelters using plastic sheets, food items and wash materials are distributed to them.  Finally, those families who have got land are given maize seeds and fertilizers in order for them to plant and recover the food that have been destroyed in their gardens

Youth for Development and Productivity (YODEP) conducts community mobilization as process through which action is stimulated by a community itself, or by others, that is planned, carried out, and evaluated by a community’s individuals, groups, and organizations on a participatory and sustained basis to improve the health, hygiene and education levels so as to enhance the overall standard of living of people  in the community.  Activities Include
